Socrates is an educational programme, which was launched by the European Union for its member states and Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein in 1995. The Czech Republic first joined the programme in the academic year 1998-1999. The Socrates programme embraces many partial programmes such as Erasmus, Comenius, Lingua, Arion, Naric, Euridica and others.
Erasmus is part of the Socrates programme designed for the area of higher education. The Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague joined the Erasmus programme on the first possible occasion, i.e. in the academic year 1998-1999.
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was designed by the European Commission to enable students to pursue part of their studies abroad. It helps partner universities to compare and mutually accredit their study programmes. ECTS is a credit system based on the comparison of requirements placed on individual subjects. It takes into account the time needed by a student to pass an examination in the given subject, i.e. the time devoted to lectures, seminars, and to self-study. A total of 60 credit points are assigned to subjects taught within one year of studies, i.e. 30 credits per semester. The credit points are distributed to individual subjects, which students take during one semester (year), according to the requirements placed on them. The system makes it easier for students to choose from study programmes offered by partner schools abroad. Students may take advantage of ECTS on condition that they themselves, the university they are currently attending, and the partner university abroad approve the suggested programme of studies.
Students who have successfully completed a fixed study programme abroad may continue their studies at their university without losing any time or credit points by staying abroad.
