Short abstract:

A method for preparation of aqueous solutions of N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide having the compound concentrations from 45 to 70 wt% and low nitrosomorpholine content up to 50 ppb through oxidation of N-methylmorpholine by an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide under temperature from 60 to 75°C and the molar ratio of H2O2 : amine falling within 0.5 to 0.9. The method consists in hydrogen peroxide effect on N-methylmorpholine containing at least one of three hydrogen peroxide stabilisers of the group of sodium pyrophosphate, sodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, sodium stannate at total concentration within the range from 0.01 to 0.05 wt% calculated to the basis of the amine amount changed and common comercial form of the stabilisers added including their crystalline water content. It is an advantage to use A-methylmortpholine as its azeotropic mixture with water (73 wt% A-methylmorpholine).
