UCT Prague is a research university primarily focused on technical chemistry, chemical and biochemical technologies, material and chemical engineering, food science, and environmental science. Its cutting-edge facilities and equipment together, with an impressive scientific and research profile, make it an ideal training ground for the managerial, R&D, and public sector leaders of the future.

UCT Prague has four faculties. Its competitive edge lies in its unique “weaving together” of teaching activities with the highest-quality basic and applied research. Across UCT Prague, scientific teams are intensively involved in various national and international cooperative R&D efforts. The Project Centre provides methodological and administrative support to researchers submitting project applications and managing funded projects.

UCT Prague considers the commercialisation of applied research to be an important part of its mission. For that reason, UCT Prague’ss Research and Technology Transfer Office offers researchers support, contributing to extending valourisation of scientific outputs and pursuing the quest for new collaborative partners in applied settings. In 2015, UCT Prague opened Technopark Kralupy, a science and technology hub focused on chemistry for building construction applications, materials engineering, and related fields. The Technopark plays an essential role in UCT Prague’s technology transfer efforts and strategies.

The Research and Technology Transfer Office facilitates internal grants for researchers and students, offers opportunities to compete in prestigious research competitions, and promotes active engagement and participation in student conferences.

UCT Prague is an attractive institution for young scientists and early career researchers, and the Project Centre actively supports hosting and mentoring ECRs, e.g. as part of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. Here, ECRs can apply for a prestigious start-up grant, the Dagmar Procházková Fund, in order to create their own UCT Prague research groups. Postdoctoral fellows at UCT Prague receive extensive international mobility support for broadening their research horizons.

UCT Prague is actively involved in global scientific efforts and is continuously expanding and deepening its collaborations with partners around the world. The basic pillars of these activities include scientific research projects, inter-university cooperation memoranda, and Erasmus+ agreements. UCT Prague additionally creates and accredits joint study programmes with universities abroad.

Paving the way for the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award, UCT Prague is committed to creating collegial working conditions, supporting continuous professional development, and transparent hiring procedures. The Personnel Department co-creates facilities for employees together with the Welcome Centre, which supports employees arriving from abroad, from assisting with the visa process to answering questions about everyday life in Prague. In its determination to be an attractive and welcoming institution for all employees and students, UCT Prague has created a Gender Equality Plan, an executive action initiative.

Scientific specialization & research interest at UCT

I received vast training in organic synthesis and crystal engineering during the masters and doctoral studies in Kharkov. The synthetic schemes covered a broad range of transformation leading to N-heterocyclic derivatives synthesized either by “click” or by Hantzsch and Biginelli multicomponent reactions.

After relocation to Czechia (CZ), I have amalgamated my skills and background with the focus of the hosting laboratory focusing on photo- and organocatalysis, surface science and self-assembly. This crystallized into an original research topic for my doctoral work in CZ: rethinking the paradigm of the role of N-heterocycle forming reactions. Some reactions are generally perceived as yielding products (Hantzsch, Biginelli), while others are predestined to link chosen fragments (CuAAC click). However, this paradigm is purely artificial and the goal of my project is to develop methodologies to question it.

Type of collaborations I am looking for

I am interested in collaborating with universities and research groups working in the area of heterogeneous photo-organo-catalysis

      •  My scientific highlights: My doctoral work was focused on evaluating the influence of mass gathering events on ecology and public health. It was the first study using the changes in the microbial communities as a proxy to quantify the potential risks. It further gained importance as a based study during the course of COVID-related lockdown to derive the ecological restorations, if any.

Scientific specialization & research interest at UCT

      • I am currently studying microbial communities thriving at extremes of life by using bioinformatics. In particular, we analyze the microbes at the level of communities (amplicon/metagenomics) and individual microbes (whole genome) to deduce their surviving mechanism. Additionally, it would be later exploited to derive industrially important bioactive compounds. E.g. The most famous bioactive compound derived from the extremophiles is TaqPolymerase, - a heat-stable enzyme that has revolutionized the field of molecular biology.

Type of collaborations I am looking for

      • I always eagerly look forward to having discussions to develop an inter/trans-disciplinary project. I strongly believe that discussion leads to criticism/curiosities which opens a new arena that has not yet been explored. Having said that, biology and chemistry always go hand in hand so I would be look forward to some collaborations in chemistry which will enable technological advancement to better understand biology.
      • Finally, my favorite Czech phrase to open up discussions "mam rad pivo :D"

      • The scientific specialization including multidisciplinary areas of chemistry and materials science that cover the frontiers of nanotechnology, materials chemistry and electrochemistry at National Taipei University of Technology. Most significantly, my research offers alternative solutions to global problems in Energy demands, health management, chemical sensing and analysis. The main research interest was in the field of electrochemical energy storage and conversion such as hydrogen evolution reaction and super capacitors. I am extremely interested on the field of electro-catalysis by developing and investigating electro-catalysts. Specifically, the chemical and electrochemical synthesis of 2-dimensional nanomaterials such as graphene. I am also experienced in preparing one-dimensional nanostructures such as multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with abundant functional groups. All these nanomaterials were then used in the development of highly sensitive and selective electrochemical sensing of glucose, dopamine, and uric acid, and drugs. I have acquired substantial experience in operating both electrochemical techniques (cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, and amperometry), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), rotating disk electrode (RDE) and optical techniques (UV-visible spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). I am also experienced in conducting Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) for analyzing surface morphology of nanomaterials.

      • My scientific highlights:
        • During my PhD study at Twente University I have designed and assessed novel pyrazine-based extractants for f-block metal separation. Mainly, pyrazine-based water soluble ligands for selective actinide stripping back from organic phase. The newly created synthetic methodology also allowed synthesis of novel phosphine ligands for transition metal catalysis, specifically Ru and Rh – catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation.
