Summary

The subject is focused on theoretical fundaments of technological process for polymer manufacture, classical and modern technologies with specificity of individual monomers, manufacture and modification of commodity polymers as well as the preparation of basic industrially produced special polymers. The subject includes a summary of raw sources and methods of polymer manufacture. Each chapter is introduced by industrial ways of corresponding monomers manufacture with focus on their physical, chemical and polymerization properties.

Syllabus

1. Basic data about world-wide polymer production, history and future trends, ecological aspects, source base of polymer chemistry.
2. Basic types of polymerization reactors, basic types of polymerization process. Polymerization in monomer phase (bulk).
3. Suspension polymerization, emulsion polymerization. C2 fraction-manufacture and utlization of ethylene. C3 fraction -manufacture and utilization of propylene.
4. Polyethylene (HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, UHMWPE). Ethylene copolymers. Chemical modifications of polyethylene.
5. Polypropylene and its copolymers. C4 fraction, butenes, buta-1,3-diene. Polymers and copolymers of isobutene, cycloalkene polymerization.
6. Polystyrene (standard, high-impact, expanded). Styrene copolymers. ABS polymers.Isolation and utilization of aromatic fraction-benzene, toluene and higher aromatics.
7. Radical, ionic and polyinsertion polymerization of dienes. Polybutadiene elastomers, liquid and thermoplastic rubbers. Polyisoprene, polychloroprene.
8. Polyvinylchloride and vinylchloride copolymers. Fluoroplastics and fluorinated elastomers. Polyvinylesters, polyvinylacetate, polyvinylalcohol, polyvinylacetals.
9. Polymethacrylates a polyacrylates. Polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitril copolymers. Polyethers, polyphenyleneoxide, polyformaldehyde.
10. Polyesters -linear, polycarbonates. Alkydes-simple, modified, unsaturated polyesters.
11. Polyamides -aliphatic, aromatic. Polyurethanes (linear, foams, elastomers).
12. Silicones. Epoxide polymers (reactoplastics).
13. Phenol plastics (novolak, resol). Aminoplastics (urea-formaldehade and melamin-formaldehyde resins).
14. Polysulfides and polysulfones. C1 chemistry: Manufacture and utilization of synthesis gas. Manufacture and utilization of methan, methanol, formaldehyde.
