PhD Position in 2D Materials for Energy Applications

PhD Position in 2D Materials for Energy Applications

About the Opportunity: Join a dynamic research team at the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague (UCT Prague), exploring nanomaterials for electrochemical energy conversion. This PhD position offers hands-on training in synthesis techniques and electrochemical methods, while investigating high-entropy alloys—an emerging class of materials with exceptional catalytic properties for electrochemical hydrogen production and water splitting. Funded by the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR), this project combines fundamental materials science with energy applications, providing excellent preparation for careers in academia, R&D, or energy industries.

What You'll Work On

  • Synthesize and characterize novel 2D nanomaterials
  • Evaluate materials for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions through electrochemical testing
  • Use state-of-the-art characterization tools (XRD, SEM, Raman spectroscopy)
  • Collaborate with international researchers and present findings at conferences
  • Publish your research in scientific journals
  • Develop both experimental skills and critical analytical thinking

What We're Looking For

You don't need to be an expert—we're looking for a motivated researcher eager to develop their skills in an interdisciplinary environment.

  • Education: MSc degree (or near completion) in chemistry, materials science, physics, or related field
  • Interest: Genuine curiosity about materials chemistry, electrochemistry, or energy technologies
  • Experience: Some previous laboratory background is highly valued. We also value diverse experiences and will provide comprehensive training
  • Attitude: Collaborative spirit, scientific curiosity, and motivation to learn new techniques

What We Offer

Professional Development:

  • Enrolment in PhD programme
  • Comprehensive training in advanced materials synthesis and electrochemical characterization
  • Mentorship and collaboration with international network
  • Opportunities to present at international conferences
  • Relocation assistance to the Czech Republic provided by experienced staff of the Welcome Office
  • Work in the vibrant city of Prague at the heart of Europe with excellent global transport connections
  • Convenient access to UCT Prague by public transport, located just three metro stations from the Old Town and near the airport

Practical Benefits:

  • 4-year funded position, 30 days annual vacation, subsidized meals at university canteen, free Czech language courses
